Hunters Helping the Hungry (HHH) is a program that enables hunters to donate venison, providing high quality protein to needy individuals throughout New Jersey. In its fifth year, HHH will continue to operate with limited funding. Therefore hunters wishing to donate deer must also donate a minimum of $25 towards the $65 fee charged by participating butchers. Hunters Helping the Hungry is now a 501-C3 Corporation, and all donations are tax deductible.

Last year hunters donated 30,000 lbs. of venison, however the general appropriation of $75,000 received from the legislation was expended by November. This year, no appropriation was granted. The Division of Fish and Wildlife, is no longer able to match our funds. The Hunters Helping the Hungry program runs strictly on donations, and is not being supported by any government agency. This is the reason for the mandatory $25 donation from each hunter donating a deer. Since funding is not expected to meet demand, hunters are urged to check with NORWESCAP, the Food Bank of Monmouth County or one of the participating butchers before harvesting a deer intended for donation. In order to satisfy their regular customers, butchers will not accept donated deer during the Six-Day Firearm Buck Season.

Hunters Helping the Hungry is in need of participating butchers.  If you are a butcher, or know a butcher who processes venison, and can pass an inspection by the N.J. State Dept. of Health, please contact: Cathy Rummel at NORWESCAP or Barbara Schultz at  Monmouth/Ocean Foodbank.
